Idealism and Opportunism: A Gold OA Overview

Idealism and Opportunism: A Gold OA Overview Open-access (OA) literature is available online to be read for free by anyone, anytime, anywhere, without registration or other hindrance—as long as they have Internet access. That’s the core of OA, and it’s a growing factor in scholarly articles (and to a lesser extent monographs). But even as OA grows, confusion as to the amount and nature of OA publishing seems to grow, aided by a lack of clear, concrete information and sometimes by deliberate misinformation. This report grows from an attempt to determine some of the facts behind the confusion by the simple process of looking at each OA journal site and seeing what was going on. https://journals.ala.org/ltr/article/view/5757/7209

11 Best Websites to Improve Writing Skills in English...

11 Best Websites to Improve Writing Skills in English... We, humans are the most expressive creatures in the world, even the most introverted! We make use of both spoken and written words to convey our message across. The art of aptly describing what’s on your mind boils down to your writing or speaking abilities. While writing plain English is no challenge, eliminating the nuances from one’s writing to get the message across adequately is a challenge for many. While the best of the writers can capture the attention of readers with their succinct description of events, most of them struggle to find words or phrases to perfectly fall in place with the content. http://www.shoutmeloud.com/best-websites-improve-english-writing.html

DESIGN THINKING FOR LIBRARIES A TOOLKIT FOR PATRON-CENTERED DESIGN

DESIGN THINKING FOR LIBRARIES: A TOOLKIT FOR PATRON-CENTERED DESIGN Design Thinking for Libraries is an approach to improving your library through creative problem solving. This toolkit guides you through Design Thinking so you can start coming up with solutions to everyday challenges within the library. Design thinking, or human-centered design, is all about starting with people — the users that visit your library. At IDEO, we’ve been using similar methods to envision new products, services, spaces, and experiences that bring them to life. We created this toolkit specifically for the library setting, and we’re looking forward to seeing how you might create impact by seeing your work through a fresh perspective: the design thinking lens! http://www.designthinkingforlibraries.com/

IFLA President Donna Scheeder Acceptance Speech...at the 81st IFLA Congress in Cape Town, South Africa.

IFLA President Donna Scheeder Acceptance Speech...at the 81st IFLA Congress in Cape Town, South Africa. I am so honored to stand before you as the new President of IFLA. Looking out over the audience it brings to mind the first assembly that I attended at my first IFLA meeting. I looked at all of the officials on the stage and wondered how does this relate to me? Never in my wildest dreams did it occur to me at that meeting that I would be President someday. So look around, someone here for maybe the first time will someday be the IFLA president. Before I talk about the journey we will undertake together over the next two years, I want to recognize those who prepared me for this day. It takes a village to make a president. http://www.ifla.org/node/9848

Open Access Publishing

Open Access Publishing: What it is and how to sustain it...Marcus Banks In the past 13 years, open access publishing—in which academic journal content is free for anyone to read online—has moved from a fringe populist movement into the mainstream. Immediate open access could someday become the default publishing model for articles in the biosciences, and perhaps for the humanities and social sciences as well. No one knows for certain if this will happen, much less how or when, but the subscription-based scholarly publishing system that matured prior to the internet appears unlikely to sustain itself indefinitely. Milestones in open access history 2002 The Budapest Open Access Initiative calls for “free and unrestricted online availability,” aka open access. 2003 The Public Library of Science (now PLOS) begins to publish PLOS Biology as a new and prominent open access journal. The Bethesda Statement on Open Access Publishing defines an open access article as freely available
