The librarian takes care of the library and its resources. Typical job of a librarian includes managing collection development and acquisitions, cataloging, collections management, circulation, and providing a range of services, such as reference, information, instruction, and training services, etc.

Librarians are trained in library and information science and are engaged in providing library services, usually holding a degree in library science. In the United States, the title Librarian is reserved for persons who have been awarded the ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information Science or MLIS degree or certified as professionals by a state agency.

In a small library, such as a school library a single librarian may be responsible for managing the overall functions of the library but big libraries, such as a large academic library may have much staff to carry out different functions of the library depending on their qualifications, expertise, and functional specializations, e.g. acquisition librarian, archivists, cataloging librarian, electronic resources librarian, metadata librarian, reference librarian, serials librarian, systems librarian, etc. Based on the type of the library served, librarians may be classified as a school librarian, academic librarian, special librarian, etc.

The increasing role of technology in libraries has a significant impact on the changing roles of librarians. A 21st-century librarian is required to be very much updated of technological changes. New age librarians are making greater use of emerging technologies in the library management and services to make it more popular and useful among the patrons. New age librarians are not mere bookworms, they are high-tech information professionals, and clever communicators, helping patrons dive in the oceans of information available in books and digital records.

The following section highlights a librarian's duties, functions, roles, responsibilities, worth, importance, with interesting facts and figures:

Librarians are regular people who have interests in all sorts of different thing. Strong libraries build strong students and it is the librarian who actually manages the functions and services of the library. In an academic setup students' performance improves significantly with high librarian collaboration.

A modern librarian may deal with the provision of acquisition, maintenance, and dissemination of information in many formats, viz. books, ebooks, serials, sound recordings, moving images, video recordings, manuscripts, cartographic materials, computer files, photographs and other graphic materials, databases, and digital resources, etc.

Collection Development and Acquisitions: Selection and ordering of resource according to the collection development policy of the library and evaluating needs of patrons, receiving resources, paying invoices, managing acquisitions of resources through purchase, subscription, license, gifts, and donations, and weeding out unrequired items.

Cataloging and Metadata: Descriptive cataloging, subject cataloging, and authority control, that will enable discovery of library resources online, providing metadata for digital resources.

Collections Management: Stamping the resources indicating the ownership of the library, pasting due date slip for circulation, affixing call number label, barcode, and putting RFID tags, preservation, repair, etc.

Library Circulation: Loan function of lending library materials. Library Circulation includes checking out library materials to library users, renewing the borrowed items, reserving checked out items for the patron, checking in materials returned, checking the materials for damage at the time of return, if found damaged then giving that to responsible staff for repair and when repair is not possible then replacement, renewal of materials, receiving payment of fines for damaged and overdue materials and payment for subscription to the library and other charges, maintaining order in the stacks by re-shelving the library materials by call number given by classification system, such as Library of Congress Classification (LCC) or Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system.

Digital Resources Management: Providing and maintaining access to licensed electronic resources. Digitizing collections for online access and maintenance of electronic resource and databases. Develop systems to organize & present digital collections. Develop systems to discover & harvest born-digital information. The rising popularity of digital archives, web-based content creation, and electronic media has shifted the way communities use libraries in the 21st century. Excessive reliance on computers have made the role of a librarian more relevant and important.

The traditional librarian was a custodian responsible for selecting and caring for physical materials but today's librarian works also a digital custodian, providing access to electronic as well as physical materials, maintaining specialized knowledge of digital databases, and evaluating electronic materials and acquiring licenses.

Reference and Information Services: Making reading suggestions and recommendations to library patrons. Answering questions by the users in person, on the phone, by e-mail, online chat, text messages, and on social media such as through a Facebook Page. Going through too many resources, in order to pick up the most valuable ones is one of the skills the patrons could learn with a help of a librarian. Librarians assist patrons with research and locating library materials on-site and in specialized electronic resources.

Instruction Services: Providing instructions and teachings in effective discovery & use of information. In times of the internet, what we mostly struggle with is the information overload, not a lack of it. Today's students are tech-savvy, but they don't know how to find required information and they need instruction and guidance. Creating guides, tutorials, handouts for effective use of library materials. The traditional librarian was a guide, assisting users in finding relevant materials. Today's librarian is a digital guide, educating patrons about the use of digital library services and generalized digital literacy, providing virtual service to users, often through library websites.

Outreach Services: Develop programs & exhibits that highlight library collections. Work with diverse user communities. Coordinating programs such as storytelling for children, information literacy or health information, reading clubs, a book talk, etc. The traditional librarian was a PR officer, maintaining connections with community institutions and other libraries. Today's librarian is a digital PR officer, developing relationships with database managers, electronic publishers, etc., hosting community events, partnering with other libraries to increase access to materials.

Personnel Management: Leading, training, and supervising library staff.

Library Planning: Planning a new library or planning for the organization and services of an established library.

Financial Management: Managing finance aspects and allocation of budgets.

Planning fundraising for the library

Keeping up to date with modern library technology

In a survey, it is found that 75 percent of all the librarians are between the age group of 25-55.

Job opportunities are on the positive side as a large number of trained librarians will be required to fill the positions.

Librarians are teachers, problem solvers, innovators, collaborators, leaders, and learners.

Reference: https://www.librarianshipstudies.com/2016/03/librarian.html
osaromehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03285486090135506631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-892401291935187388.post-19676985733985854832021-01-13T12:31:00.000+01:002021-01-13T12:31:40.201+01:00Visions of Success: Academic Libraries in a Post COVID-19 World
Visions of Success: Academic Libraries in a Post COVID-19 World

by..Christopher Cox and Elliot Felix

Academic libraries have been undergoing transformation. In response to student and faculty needs, libraries have moved from physical spaces valued for their collections and research support to full-service research and student success hubs. COVID-19 has both accelerated these changes and, in some cases, upended them. The pandemic has resulted in increased use of, and reliance on, digital collections, and more interest in self-service and online programming. The in-person reference interview and the learning commons as a physical one stop shop are on hiatus, though the need for those services remains.

How will COVID-19 change how libraries offer their collections and services in the long term? With it, doors are opened to countless other opportunities to learn and grow. Without it, people struggle to find work, to make the most of the internet, or to gain new skills. Libraries traditionally have a key role within the infrastructure of any country for promoting literacy.

From providing opportunities for pre-schoolers to maximise their exposure to language, to complementing the work of teachers in schools, to allowing adults to continue to hone their skills through access to books, and through offering a gateway to further learning for those who need it, libraries are often recognised in national literacy strategies.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused major disruption in teaching and learning in general, including of course to literacy-promotion. Yet simply suspending work here is not an option.

Without opportunities to build these skills, people with low-literacy risk falling behind. In schools, less well-off children can see the gap between them and their more fortunate peers grow. Outside, at a time when millions more people are facing unemployment, a lack of skills will make it even more difficult to find work, or at least benefit from government programmes.

Fortunately, libraries have shown both resilience and inventiveness in finding ways to continue to support literacy throughout the populations they serve.

https://www.ifla.org/node/93299

osaromehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03285486090135506631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-892401291935187388.post-46415710333300505492020-09-08T09:30:00.001+01:002020-09-08T09:30:12.123+01:00 Libraries In Movement
One of the that pique the interest of the most curious minds in the Library & Information Sciences “universe“ is that of mobile libraries. These nomadic, wandering, itinerant units —with as many shapes and appearances as potential names— are devoted to taking books from the safe comfort of their shelves and moving them wherever they are needed or appreciated — which, for many cases, are the same.

Such a curiosity is probably provoked by the handful of “exotic” experiences that are generally used as illustrative examples when describing that particular section of the library universe.

https://princh.com/libraries-in-movement/#.X1c_LdxKiM8

osaromehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03285486090135506631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-892401291935187388.post-25969050347417002762020-09-08T09:20:00.000+01:002020-09-08T09:20:08.405+01:00Which Generation Reads The Most?
Have you ever wondered which generation reads the most? Basically, 2019 marks the first time a huge quantity of books published in 1923—including works by Virginia Woolf, Agatha Christie, and Robert Frost—have become legally downloadable since digital books became a thing.

So, how do you actually download these books? It largely depends on what site you go to, and if you can’t find a book on one site, you can probably find it on another. For instance, ReadPrint.com, as well as The Literature Network (mostly major authors), and Librivox (audio books), Authorama (all in the public domain), and over a dozen other sites all have vast selections of free ebooks.https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/qvq99b/how-to-download-the-books-that-just-entered-the-public-domain

The Love of Books: The Brave Librarians of Sarajevo....
In the midst of war, library staff in Sarajevo risked their lives to rescue over 10,000 precious books and manuscripts."Protecting a library is not an easy task," says Mustafa Jahic, "especially during wartime."

It was 1992, the siege of Sarajevo had begun, and Jahic - then the director of the Gazi Husrev-Beg public library - had in his care a priceless, ancient collection of hand-written books and illuminated manuscripts.

"The Gazi Husrev-Beg library contains the memories of all the generations of the last 1,000 years. More than 100,000 items. Everything from manuscripts to printed books," says Osman Lavic, the library's keeper of manuscripts.
This report was commissioned in response to the growing trend of commercial acquisition of critical infrastructure in our institutions. It is intended to provide a comprehensive look at the current players in this arena, their strategies and potential actions, and the implications of these on the operations of our libraries and home institutions. It also outlines suggestions for an initial set of strategic responses for the community to consider building out in order to ensure community control of both this infrastructure and the data generated by/resident on it....
Entrepreneurial Spirit: How Libraries Support Entrepreneurs....

Becoming an entrepreneur is a dream situation for many that associates freedom with control of their career. Being able to create, build and control one’s career is alluring but requires hard work, time and resources. Libraries can be a great resource for local business and entrepreneurs are one community segment that are being targeted by public libraries.

Librarians can serve as an extension of your staff and will help you harness the power of these resources to grow your business.” Sometimes misidentified as repositories for dusty books, today’s libraries are actually cutting edge information hubs designed to help people get the resources, materials and connections they need, whether for work, school, pleasure or all of the above.

Get Connected: Public Access Policy Toolkit..

The Public Access Policy Toolkit looks at the different policy areas where libraries may need to advocate to ensure that all our institutions can provide internet access to their users.

With much progress still needed to ensure that all libraries are connected to the internet, IFLA has worked through the Dynamic Coalition on Public Access in Libraries at the Internet Governance Forum to produce a toolkit for advocacy on this topic.

The toolkit provides an overview of the different policy areas where government action is necessary.

It is intended for libraries and library associations who can use the diagnostic toolkit at the beginning to choose priorities. You can then use the key advocacy points to shape your own campaigning, and the additional links to find out more.

Libraries lead the way to digital citizenship. They should be the first places where most advanced technologies are implemented. Today, libraries are not only about lending books. They are creative spaces, not only for individuals, but also teams. They are economic incubators and learning hubs.

Most of all, the libraries are the entry points to the digital world. They are the way to embrace technology and avoid digital exclusion.

Perceptions 2018: An International Survey of Library Automation...by Marshall Breeding

This twelfth edition of the International Survey of Library Automation presents the latest data on how libraries perceive the effectiveness of the strategic technology systems upon which they depend for their daily operations and to fulfill the expectations of their patrons. This report presents and interprets survey responses gathered from November 2018 through February 2019. The survey focuses primarily on integrated library systems and library services platforms as the applications used to acquire, describe, manage, and provide access to their collections. It also assesses the quality of support given from the respective vendor and probes interest in migrating to new solutions and attitudes toward open source alternatives.

The 2018 Library Automation Perceptions Report provides evaluative ratings submitted by individuals representing 3549 libraries from 78 countries describing experiences with 104 different automation products, including both proprietary and open source systems. The survey results include 909 narrative comments providing candid statements -- both positive and negative – about the products and companies involved or statements of intent regarding future automation plans. This report analyzes the results of the survey, presents a variety of statistical tables based on the data collected, and provides some initial observations. It aims to provide information to libraries as they evaluate their options for strategic technology products and to the organizations involved in providing these products and services as constructive criticism to help guide improvements.
13 user groups that libraries could target

The library is about the people. When thinking about the identity crisis librarians have been facing, it becomes clearer and clearer that the library is defined by the local community. Thus, before thinking about “what to offer”, many libraries are putting more emphasis on the “who”.

By dividing the local community into smaller segments that have similar needs and demands from your library, it will be easier to understand how you can fulfill them.

1.Small Businesses/ Entrepreneurs
2.Families with small children
3.Teens
4.Students
5.Elderly
6.Refugees
7.Job Seekers
8.People with disabilities
9.Newcomers
10.Teachers
11.Lonely people
12.Tourists
13.Homeless people

The examples above are just a few of the segments your library can choose to target. It is important as a library to find out what your user segments are. Libraries that succeed to target all their local community would clearly create a lot of value for those people, but not only that, they will ensure that libraries are relevant for everyone.

The Atlas of New Librarianship by R.David Lankes...

Libraries have existed for millennia, but today the library field is searching for solid footing in an increasingly fragmented (and increasingly digital) information environment. What is librarianship when it is unmoored from cataloguing, books, buildings, and committees? In The Atlas of New Librarianship, R. David Lankes offers a guide to this new landscape for practitioners. He describes a new librarianship based not on books and artefacts but on knowledge and learning; and he suggests a new mission for librarians: to improve society through facilitating knowledge creation in their communities.

The vision for a new librarianship must go beyond finding library-related uses for information technology and the Internet; it must provide a durable foundation for the field. Lankes recasts librarianship and library practice using the fundamental concept that knowledge is created through conversation. New librarians approach their work as facilitators of conversation; they seek to enrich, capture, store and disseminate the conversations of their communities.

To help librarians navigate this new terrain, Lankes offers a map, a visual representation of the field that can guide explorations of it; more than 140 Agreements, statements about librarianship that range from relevant theories to examples of practice; and Threads, arrangements of Agreements to explain key ideas, covering such topics as conceptual foundations and skills and values.

Books and libraries – a reason to celebrate....

Some people are fortunate enough to live in a country where having books at home is commonplace, where literary awards or awareness days are part of the annual calendar and there’s a thriving book industry. So sometimes it is easy to forget quite how integral books are to our lives.

Book Aid International has gathered these stories from readers in Malawi and they are a powerful reminder of the difference and joy that books and libraries can bring.

5 ways you can use partnerships to transform your library into a community hub...

There is no doubt that people value libraries as a great source of information and relaxation during work or leisure time. Nonetheless, by taking a brief look at the public library statistics offered by UNESCO, it seems the direction for public libraries is one of funding cuts, decreasing amount of book loans or reducing the number of branches.

The modern library goes beyond the traditional book-based library service. There is much more a library can offer to its visitors and it can become a central hub for knowledge exchange where people can easily spend hours and hours. Here are 5 ways you can transform your library into a community hub.

Creating the Catalog, Before and After FRBR by Karen Coyle........

There is a great deal of talk today about the future of the library catalog. There is also ongoing work on developing a "next generation" library bibliographic data format, possibly based on the model presented by the IFLA study group on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records. There is a tendency, however, to treat the current state of data and catalogs as a starting point. The historical context is, however, much richer.

The history that we need to confront is long and complex. In terms of technology, you can date library catalogs back to the times of clay tablets and to tags affixed to the ends of scrolls in Greek and Roman times. Technological progress led to the use of book catalogs, paper slips, and eventually cards. In modern times the catalog technology moved from physical cards to a virtual catalog on computer and managed by a database system. In progress today is a transition from closed database systems to the use of the Web of data and the World Wide Web Consortium’s Resource Description Framework (RDF) . We also need to consider how information itself has changed over time, from the first written symbols to virtual reality. And finally there is the lengthy history of libraries and their functions over the milennia of reccorded history.
