ODLIS: Online Dictionary of Library and Information Science

ODLIS: Online Dictionary of Library and Information Science ODLIS includes not only the terminology of the various specializations within LIS but also the vocabulary of publishing, printing, binding, the book trade, graphic arts, book history, literature, bibliography, telecommunications, and computer science when, in the author's judgment, a definition might prove useful to librarians and information specialists in their work. Entries are descriptive, with examples provided when appropriate. The definitions of terms used in the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules follow AACR2 closely and are therefore intended to be prescriptive. The dictionary includes some slang terms and idioms and a few obsolete terms, often as See references to the term in current use. When the meaning of a term varies depends on the field in which it is used, priority is given to the definition that applies within the field with which it is most closely associated. Definitions unrelated to LIS are generally

How Libraries Help Build a Safer Internet

How Libraries Help Build a Safer Internet.. Libraries have always been about giving people access to the knowledge they need to take on the world. Through promoting literacy, innovation and creativity, they empower users to discover new perspectives for themselves, find better jobs, and generate new ideas. These are the foundations of a strong society. http://www.ifla.org/node/11197

Library Training Rooms..Klaus U. Werner

The (Nearly) Perfect Training Room...Klaus U. Werner Library space, where librarians teach information literacy, should not look like an old-fashioned classroom or a computerized training room which might be found in a computer centre. In a traditional information technology  training room or a computer laboratory.  The furniture and its arrangement convey messages to occupants: don’t move, don’t discuss, don’t feel comfortable! Tables are usually placed in rows. There are rarely windows that allow views of the outside world. The computers dominate. There might be some digitized displays – but there is limited space for the learners. The students using the facility will become tired very quickly.  https://iflalbes.wordpress.com/2017/02/10/the-nearly-perfect-training-room/

Budgetary allocations for books, newspapers, other reading materials and library accessories..Nkemdilim Osigwe Ph.d

Budgetary allocations for books, newspapers, other reading materials and library accessories...Nkemdilim Osigwe Ph.d Budgetary allocations of a government are clear pointers of its policy thrusts and interests. Obviously, the Nigerian government is enamoured with books, newspapers, other reading materials and library accessories as can be seen in the allocations to different offices in the 2016 budget (/http://www.slideshare.net/statisense/library-books-and-library-accessories). However, the Library, especially, the National Library that is statutorily empowered to acquire, process, organize and keep books and other reading materials for the general public seems to be somehow shortchanged. A cursory look at the analysis shows that what offices receive for books, newspapers and library accessories appear to be higher than what is given to the National Library for the same purpose! This is a trend. It is also a signpost of the misunderstanding of roles of libraries in communities.

12 Leadership Lessons Everyone Should Learn From Jesus

12 Leadership Lessons Everyone Should Learn From Jesus....Paul Sohn Jesus is the quintessential leader. During His life on earth, he turned three years of ministry into a worldwide movement that changed history. Today, more people follow Him than any other leader in the world. As a model leader, Jesus practiced the most vital principles of leadership—and he provides an example for us to imitate. In the spirit of Christmas, I’d like to share 12 powerful life lessons every leader must emulate: http://paulsohn.org/12-life-lessons-every-leader-should-learn-from-jesus/

Why do we need Libraries in communities? Nkem Osuigwe

Why do we need Libraries in communities?.......Nkem Osuigwe Librarians, academicians and a few might understand and appreciate the importance of Libraries in the society. However there are so many that do not recognize that or probably they've forgotten! That's what advocacy is all about- pointing out to people, reminding those that have forgotten of the exclusive niche that libraries have in education, literacy and in promoting democratic, sustainable and progressive societies. Libraries help build reconciliation in societies ravaged by hate and animosity. How? Misinformation breeds misunderstandings and hatred. Libraries always have information that disproves rumours and half-truths. Libraries give access to information that helps to understand and place the diversities in the world in clearer perspectives. Libraries serve as neutral gathering places in so many societies where people come from 'different sides of the track'. Many voters in African democratic s

Stressors and librarians: How mindfulness can help

Stressors and librarians :How mindfulness can help....Richard Moniz, Jo Henry, Joe Eshleman, Lisa Moniz, and Howard Slutzky Mindfulness has many definitions, depending on context, but most of these focus on maintaining awareness in the present moment and treating ourselves and others with patience and kindness. Librarians seem to be naturally acquisitive and persistent (especially when seeking information) and demonstrate a desire to help others. In fact, one recent review of the literature exploring why individuals pursue an MLIS determined, “The most influential factors were love of books and reading, nature of library work, interesting job, and desire to help people [emphasis added].”1 It was this emphasis on helping others that influenced us to write The Mindful Librarian: Connecting the Practice of Mindfulness to Librarianship.2 Throughout the text we drew upon what we felt were numerous natural connections between the practice of mindfulness and the everyday work of libraria

Inside the Design Library, a vast archive of patterns and textiles

Inside the Design Library, a vast archive of patterns and textiles..... Eliza Williams  Where do you look for inspiration? If you’re in the fashion or home interiors industries, it might be at the Design Library, a vast archive of patterns and textiles dating from the 1750s to the present that is held across two venues, in New York’s Hudson Valley and central London. A new book by Phaidon takes readers inside its many treasures, while we have a rummage through the shelves. One of fashion’s best-kept secrets is revealed to a wider audience this month, via a new book from Phaidon. The Design Library has been in existence since 1972, and is used by major names across fashion, high and low, from Oscar De La Renta and Calvin Klein to Nike and Target. It’s easy to see why: the Design Library is a real treasure trove. Its US collection is vast, held across a 12,000 square foot loft in a converted fabric mill in New York’s Hudson Valley, where over 7 million examples of textiles

Information for national development, libraries as major stakeholders

Information for national development, libraries as major stakeholders....Nkemdilim Osigwe Ph.d Information has become a key resource for national development. Nations without income yielding natural resources can thrive profitably on the creation and transfer of information. Increasingly, nations are using and relying on information to gain competitive edge rather than just natural resources and cheap labour. However, a nation requires literate, educated and skilled manpower in order to generate, transfer and use information as the main grid of it’s economy. Literacy is central to most human, technological, economic and political developments. Literacy helps to give expression to creativity and innovations and is the main key to generating, applying and spreading knowledge. No country can foster development without a literate population. Multinational bodies are most unlikely to invest heavily in any country with low literacy levels anyway! Libraries are all about literacy

Library as Infrastructure

Library as Infrastructure....SHANNON MATTERN Melvil Dewey was a one-man Silicon Valley born a century before Steve Jobs. He was the quintessential Industrial Age entrepreneur, but unlike the Carnegies and Rockefellers, with their industries of heavy materiality and heavy labor, Dewey sold ideas. His ambition revealed itself early: in 1876, shortly after graduating from Amherst College, he copyrighted his library classification scheme. That same year, he helped found the American Library Association, served as founding editor of Library Journal, and launched the American Metric Bureau, which campaigned for adoption of the metric system. For millennia libraries have acquired resources, organized them, preserved them and made them accessible (or not) to patrons. But the forms of those resources have changed — from scrolls and codices; to LPs and LaserDiscs; to e-books, electronic databases and open data sets. Libraries have had at least to comprehend, if not become a key node wit

US Museums, Libraries Collect Signs From Women's Protests The National Museum of American History in Washington and smaller institutions said they were collecting and sorting through protest signs they now considered records of nationwide protests of historic proportions. Women activists, outraged by Trump's campaign rhetoric and behavior they found to be misogynistic, spearheaded scores of marches in the United States and sympathy rallies around the world on Saturday . http://www.voanews.com/a/museums-libraries-collect-signs-women-protests/3691189.html

Using Libraries To Support National Literacy Efforts

Using Libraries To Support National Literacy Efforts A network of libraries exists in almost every country: there are around 320,000 public libraries worldwide, of which about 230,000 are in developing and transitioning countries. In addition, there are more than a million school, community, research, university, national and special libraries (IFLA, 2016). Although literacy is at the core of most library activities, too often local, regional and national literacy goals and efforts are not systematically connected to libraries. As a result, these efforts fail to benefit from working closely with institutions that often have the long-standing trust of communities and already provide useful literacy services to children, youth and adults. http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0024/002467/246778e.pdf
