Academic Libraries and the Struggle to Remain Relevant: Why Research is Conducted Elsewhere

Academic libraries are facing a critical challenge to remain relevant in the eyes of students and faculty members who are engaged in academic research at all levels. The academic library's brand is impeccable. It is the first choice among students and faculty members alike when they must locate high quality research materials. In an era when the library is virtually crammed with an ever-growing mountain of the latest research materials, student researchers are turning to Google in growing numbers, not because of it's quality content, but because academic library patrons are often confused and disappointed by their library search experiences. Grow the Profession: Marketing the Librarian

There are numerous ways for librarians to market themselves, online and offline. While the method above requires the social skills necessary to “talk the talk” with the administration of an organization (in my case, a law firm), there are other ways in which we can present our ideas, project implementations, articles, and awards to the necessary personnel. This article will address three topics. First, I will talk about how the online world is full of resources and tools for librarians to market themselves. Second, I will show examples of how some librarians market themselves well in these online environments. Last, I will discuss the multifaceted reasons why librarians should market themselves. Five Laws of Library Science (EBooks edition)

I had a thought about the Five Laws of Library Science by Dr. S.R. Ranganathan. If I might be so bold, I’d like to suggest an eBook version to the Five Laws. So, here it goes. 1. EBooks are for use. 2. Every reader his or her eBook. 3. Every book, any e-reader. 4. Save the time of the e-reader patron. 5. The library is an evolving organism. www.lisnews.org
